Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) When I got this kit, I expected my 9 year old son to be overjoyed. He'll spend hours building models with Legos, so I expected him to enjoy this new style of building materials.
He did, at first. But he quickly became frustrated with the instructions, which aren't as exactly step-by-step as they might be, especially given that the smaller pieces don't show up all that well in the photographs. His frustration caused him to snap the little connecting tabs off a couple of pieces before he got the hang of attaching and disconnecting the rods.
My 14 year old daughter, however, loves this set. She's built the balloon and a couple of other models. (I was actually happy to discover this was what she was up to after she'd stalked off to her room and slammed the door.) Teen angst aside, K'nex takes more finesse and patience than the lego kits rated for the same age range, so consider the fine motor skills and persistence of your intended recipient.
The toolchest box is a nice gimmick, but it's basically a fairly flimsy cardboard box. My daughter sorted all the pieces into a multi-drawer parts organizer so she can find the pieces she's looking for.
