CUSTOMER REVIEW

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) This is an updated version of the old Simon game from the 1980s updated for the iPhone generation. Simon is a game of sequencing in which you have to match Simon's moves. It will flash one light and you have to press that light. Then it will flash the original light and a new light and you have to press those two lights in that order. Then the original two lights and a new light, and so on until you fail to match Simon's sequence. You can still play the original Original Simon game, but there are also three new variations of the game available with this update.

The game takes batteries but, surprisingly, they are included, so all you have to do is reset the game from demo mode to play mode and you're ready to go. Unlike the original Simon game, this game is designed to be hand held rather than resting on a table. If you are right-handed, you will hold it in your left hand. I found the grip to be quite comfortable.

When you first turn on the game all four lights will flash, giving you your choice of four different games. If you press the red button, you can then select which level you want as far as you have unlocked the levels. The game starts pretty basic, like the original Simon and becomes more difficult as you go. At the early levels, you only have to get a few right before it moves you on to the next level and restarts the sequencing. As the levels progress, you get the upgraded features of swipes and combinations. Having to remember whether you're supposed to just tap or swipe or combo definitely adds to the challenge. There are eight levels and so far we've only made it to level seven.

The yellow game is simply the original Simon game with taps only - this might be a good place to start if you've never played the game before or for younger children. The blue level is supposed to be the crazy level with all kinds of swipes and combinations, but I didn't see much difference between this game and the upper levels of the red game. The green game is a "party" version that pauses each time to allow you to pass the game to another player in between each new additional new light/swipe/combo.

This game is both addictive and frustrating. The game is oddly too sensitive yet not sensitive enough at different times. Sometimes you will swipe and it will only pick up on a tap or perhaps it will miss a tap altogether. At other times it will take even the lightest and most fleeting accidental pressure as a tap and count it as an error. It's rather frustrating to actually get the sequence right but have it be counted as an error. But despite this (or perhaps because of this), you'll probably find yourself starting yet another new game. Another frustrating aspect of the game is that if you are playing in bright sunlight, it is difficult to see the lights.

It's important to remember that speed is not an issue, simply accuracy. As you get further into a pattern, the game will speed up. But don't feel pressured to follow suit. Take your time to remember the proper sequence and don't get flustered trying to keep up.

The recommended age for this product is eight and above, which sounds about right. My almost six-year-old daughter has a very good memory and understanding for sequences, but motor skills are an issue too. My almost eight-year-old daughter really likes the game and does about as well as I do.

The game will shut itself off after only a short time of inattention so you needn't worry about turning it off. The power button only turns it on. Once the game is on, the power button becomes the sound button. There are three levels of sound - loud, moderate and off. Each colored light has a different sound and the tap sounds different than the swipe, which can aid you in remembering the sequence.

This is a good re-introduction of a favorite 80s game and is fun for the whole family.
